Remember that you need to be patient. You won’t be speaking Spanish fluently in several days. Even if you had all the vocabulary and verbs remembered, your sentence structure may need a little work. You’ll get nowhere fast if you put a lot of pressure on yourself to speak fluently in too short a time. Just relax and learn in a slow but sure manner. This allows you to feel more relaxed with Spanish. It’s also good to learn slowly is because people will have more patience with you if they know you’re trying to learn their language. If you try to pass yourself off as completely fluent too soon you could offend someone! Whenever you can, start to think in Spanish rather than your native language. Whenever you catch yourself thinking about anything, make the effort to translate whatever it is into Spanish. Take your time and learn how to do this at your own pace. The idea is to take any internal dialogues you might have into the Spanish equivalent as much as possible. Like any skill, you can become better at it the more you try it. As you practice, you will notice that you can translate words faster. There will come a point when this will become automatic, and you’ll think in Spanish without trying. Once you can think in Spanish, you can then practice making these thoughts verbal by speaking them out loud; this way your ability to speak the language will also improve.

It helps if you follow a plan. Most courses use a very specific approach to teaching languages. Like learning most things, the best approach is to follow a step by step method. Don’t try to start off reading a complex novel; begin with the alphabet and saying “good morning” and the like. One thing to keep in mind is that learning the rules of grammar is much more difficult than learning vocabulary, especially when you are starting out. Whatever course you decide to use, there is a reason why things are in the order they are; don’t try to change this by going from one place to another. This will make your absorbing of the new language much less difficult. If you don’t adhere to the way the program is meant to be followed, you make the whole process more complicated. It doesn’t make sense to try to change a proven method.
