Learn the Spanish Alphabet
The initial thing you need to do prior to learning Spanish is to learn Spanish Alphabet phonetics, by starting to learn the Spanish alphabet phonetically you will have a much greater chance of correctly pronouncing words the first time, words that you possibly haven’t heard spoken by a native speaker or a fellow student.
All the letters that you know from the English alphabet are also used in Spanish with an additional 3 extra letters; these extra letters are basically accented or extended letters and the addition of them to the Spanish alphabet actually makes the job of pronouncing correctly that much easier as they each represent a changing or different sound.
When you begin to learn Spanish, you will probably notice that pronunciation is a lot simpler than you believed it would be, because unlike in English, you pretty much pronounce words as they are written! With all languages there will be exceptions, and Spanish is no different, but it is extremely uncommon and something that you won’t need to concern yourself with initially.
From a personal view, I believe the quickest and definitely the best way to fully comprehend and learn the pronunciation of every letter of the Spanish alphabet is to listen to each letter being spoken but it will not do any damage to list the letters below along with their phonetic title; again, I cannot highlight enough that you definitely need to have heard the letters, and repeat them, to really understand how they work and how they are spoken.
Here is the Spanish alphabet with the phonetic pronunciation in brackets:
- A (ah)
- B (bay)
- C (thay)
- CH (chay)
- D (day)
- E (ay)
- F (‘eff-ay)
- G (Hay)
- H (‘ah-chay)
- I (ee)
- J (‘Ho-tah)
- K (kah)
- L (‘ell-ay)
- LL (‘ell-yay)
- M (‘emm-ay)
- N (‘enn-ay)
- N (‘enn-yay)
- O (o)
- P (pay)
- Q (koo)
- R (‘airr-ay)
- S (‘ess-ay)
- T (tay)
- U (oo)
- V (‘oo-vay)
- W (‘oo-vay-’do-blay)
- X (‘ay-kiss)
- Y (ee-gre-’ay-gah)
- Z (‘thay-tah)
The additional three letters can be a little strange for the newcomer to Spanish especially when trying to find words that start with them in a Spanish dictionary; this is because each of these letters has their own section in Spanish dictionaries, so if you were looking in the C section of a dictionary when looking for a word that begins CH you can be forgiven your frustrations when you can’t find anything as this is a minor indiscretion that is part of the induction into learning Spanish that all students are guilty of when just starting out.
It is recommended that beginners and those seeking a refresher course, that the simplest method to learn Spanish and the Spanish alphabet is to use a good Spanish language course. There are some really good courses available nowadays that are very good value for money and extremely good quality as well. There is little requirement to spend $200 to $500 on a top of the range program when you can buy one that is very similar, if not exactly the same quality for much less.
